This project is created for the competition named The Usaha Tegas Heritage Art Competition. The purpose of this competition is to celebrate the nation’s rich cultural history through art. My concept for the project is to discover the culture of Peranakan because I am a Peranakan descent. I would also like to learn more about Peranakan culture and how Peranakan is involved in Malaysia’s heritage. The theme of this project is the weddings.
All the visuals are hand painted with Chinese painting colour. The purple and blue are inspired by the Batik fabric normally worn by Peranakan people. The paper fans are meant to view together as a painting.
The elements:
Dragon and phoenix - They are both found in Chinese and Malay culture. The colours are related to the Chinese weddings and Malay royalty. Both of these mystical creatures are a part of Chinese weddings as they represent the groom and bride.
Peonies - Found in Peranakan and Malay clothing. Some Malay weddings also like to
include peonies and they are hand drawn with Chinese painting colour then lined with Batik wax.
Mini Kerongsang - Indicates the jewelry worn by the bride for the Peranakan and Malay people on their wedding day.
Chinese knot 中国结 - Represents the Chinese culture.
